URBAN CUBA The Uncensored Experience featuring YOMIL live in concert is a music and dance spectacle for Canadians to discover the new sounds of Cuban music. What began 25 years ago as an offshoot of reggaeton and dancehall, has today evolved into a rhythmically distinct, hot and energetic Cuban music phenomenon characterised by heavy influences of Timba and Rumba. Branded as “Reparto”, you can think of this music genre as a cousin of AfroBeat. Despite being the most popular music in Cuba right now, Reparto struggles to become officially recognised due to its innate irreverent nature and status quo defiance. URBAN CUBA proudly highlights the vibrancy of Cuba’s urban movement as testimony of the island’s cultural wealth.
The URBAN CUBA show features exciting performances by a variety of artists that embrace the concept of urban, displaying the diversity and commonalities of urban rhythms and dances across the spectrum of Caribbean, Latin, North American and Canadian societies. Each tour stop will be wrapped up by YOMIL live in full concert, showing you a side of Cuban music rarely seen in Western Canada.
YOMIL, one of the top exponents and innovators in the Cuba urban genre, is a streetwise storyteller nurtured by tales of the hood and human nature. His distinctive voice will take you to a barrio of the Caribbean where you’ll dance uninhibitedly to one of the hottest acts you’ll have seen in town, to date.
